Album Review: Profanatica – Wreathed In Dead Angels via Hells Headbangers by Michelle

A quite known name in the american scene, black/death metal act Profanatica have proven their blasphemous image with their latest upcoming release ‘Wreathed In Dead Angels’, in a pretty enjoyable way, I’d say. Even for just 22 minutes, this EP quite catched my attention with its heavy riffs and low pitched vocals.

First off, the gruesome artwork of the album cover fits perfectly with the way Profanatica is preaching their ideas. Four decapitated heads of angels on the ground, their bodies entangled in eachother, representing the band’s ideology of anti-christianity, and also the title of the album itself.

The record starts off strong from the very first track: ‘Hung in Golgatha’, the absence of an intro which is present in lots of albums really brings out how straightforward Profanatica is. Obviously though, this is not a bad thing at all since I prefer it this way. If I were to be completely honest, this song didn’t really stand out to me, but I still enjoyed it as much as the others. Vocals have a rawness in them which I find hard to explain, but they’re much lower pitched than the usual black metal ones, mostly because of the way Profanatica incorporates death metal aspects into their music.

While the first song didn’t really give me hope that I’d find this album much on my liking, the second track, ‘The Sixth Hour’ proved me wrong with its bouncy and rythmic riffs, which is probably my favorite feature in metal as a whole. This song has a tint of grind into it when it comes to the instrumental, at least this is how I personally see it. Either way, this is going straight into my playlist upon release. If you’re looking for the perfect song to headbang to, this is the one.

While I kind of liked ‘Descent From The Cross’, it felt oddly similar to the first track, except the tremolo picking from near the end of the song is probably what I enjoyed the most. As for ‘The Entombment’, I can say that I quite like the title of it, since I find it pretty easy to memorize. I really admired the growls and the tempo changes in this song, but it just kind of feels like the tracks are copy pasted over and over. ‘Wreathed In Dead Angels’ though, on the other hand, feels a bit heavier despite its short length. What I instantly noticed is the synth starting from around minute 2, a feature which probably is what made the song most enjoyable for me.

The last track, ‘By Thine Agony’, is quite alike to ‘The Sixth Hour’ with the riffs, making me instantly focused on it. I think this is a nice way to end this mini album, because I was, If I were to be completely honest, almost starting to get a bit bored. This obviously doesn’t mean that I did not like this album, it’s just that I think some of these songs lack a bit of diversity in each other. Besides this, I’m not complaining because I think Profanatica does a really good job fusing different features into black metal. 8.5/10
