It’s not that we are better than the universe, we are part of the universe. We are in the universe and the universe is in us. Neil deGrasse Tyson

Dead Space” is the eighth album by the Russian dark ambient artist, The Torture Chamber. This album is an immersive sonic journey through the vast and incomprehensible power of space. According to Andrey, “Dead Space narrates the power of space, which is impossible for a human to comprehend.” Through a minimal yet evocative soundscape, each track reflects the cosmic expanse, capturing the solitude, wonder, and mystery of the galaxies.

The journey begins with “Stargate”, where a distant sound slowly grows, engulfing the listener. It feels as though you are stepping through a portal into the unknown—surrounded by darkness yet illuminated by countless stars, as depicted in the album’s cover art. This track embodies a moment of transition, standing at the boundary of two worlds, carrying the weight of loss and grief while searching for renewal. As the sound fades, it leaves you floating in space, lost but hopeful. “The Giant Quasar” follows, maintaining a steady, immersive rhythm. This track narrates the epic collapse of space and time as everything is consumed by a supermassive black hole. The minimal soundscape enhances the feeling of inevitability—an endless descent into the void. The title track, “Dead Space”, introduces subtle shifts in sound and atmosphere. The music evokes a profound sense of loneliness and cold emptiness—where nothing remains, and life has long since vanished. Then, in “Nebula”, we drift among the stars, embraced by their distant glow. The immersive soundscape returns, echoing through the galaxy with remarkable simplicity. The track builds gradually as if a pillar of light is piercing through the darkness, only to be swallowed again by the vast unknown. As we continue our journey, an “Unknown Object” emerges from the void. Is it a threat or salvation? A soothing undercurrent in the soundscape hints at hope, the possibility of returning home. After enduring isolation and hardship, we find ourselves under “Desert Skies”, yearning for a new world, and a new life. Ultimately, all things must return to the void. Everything comes to an end, and the sound is here to take us, we have to surrender to the infinite. The final echoes are fading… this is “The Last Flight”… flight to eternity.

Dead Space” is a hauntingly beautiful exploration of cosmic vastness, solitude, and existential wonder. Through its minimal yet powerful compositions, “The Torture Chamber” invites us to lose ourselves in the sound of the galaxies—adrift in the unknown, searching for meaning among the stars. 8.5/10 by Pegah
