Anachoret ist eine Solo atmosphärische black metal Band aus Bayern. Ihr erstes Album Syndrom wurde letzten Monat vom Musiklabel Folter Records released. Ich war sofort beeindruckt von der Musik und wollte mehr über die Band erfahren. K.C. hat sich netterweise die Zeit genommen, um meine Fragen zu beantworten.

Anachoret is a solo atmospheric black metal band from Bavaria. The band’s first album Syndrom was released last month on Folter Records. I was instantly impressed by the music and wanted to learn more about the band. K.C. kindly took the time to answer my questions.

Danke, dass du dem Blessed Altar Zine Interview zugestimmt hast. Meine erste Frage ist, wie würdest du die Musik von Anachoret beschreiben?

Thanks for agreeing to this interview for Blessed Altar Zine. Firstly, how do you describe the music of Anachoret?

K.C: Ich würde die Musik von Anachoret als Black Metal mit atmosphärischen Anteilen bezeichnen. Melancholisch, nachdenklich mit teils auch brachialen Teilen. In der Vergangenheit ist auch schon der Begriff “Post Black Metal” gefallen, was ich nicht unterschreiben würde, aber auch nicht gänzlich verneinen kann. Eigentlich mache ich mir über die genaue Bezeichnung eher wenig Gedanken und versuche das zu verwirklichen, was mir in den Sinn kommt.

I would describe the music of Anachoret as Black Metal with atmospheric elements. Melancholic, thoughtful and in parts raw. In the past the term “Post Black Metal” was also used. I wouldn’t totally sign off on that, but I can’t say it’s completely wrong. Actually, I don’t think much about what to call it, I just do what makes sense to me.

Syndrom ist dein erstes Album. Wie zufrieden bist du damit?

Syndrom is your first full-length album. How happy are you with it?

K.C: Mit dem Sound bin ich sehr zufrieden. Es ist auch mit Sicherheit das bisher am meisten durchdachte Stück Musik, wenn ich es mit früheren Releases vergleiche. Mit den Songstrukturen bin daher größtenteils auch zufrieden. Klar ist, dass gerade als Solo-Musiker das Gesamtwerk eigentlich erst nach den Aufnahmen gehört werden kann und deshalb würde ich jetzt manche Dinge doch anders machen, aber hundertprozentige Zufriedenheit wird man als Musiker ohnehin kaum erreichen.

I am very satisfied with the sound. It is also a certainty that up till now this is my most thought through piece of music when I compare it to everything I’ve done before. I’m almost totally satisfied with the song structures. Clearly, as a solo musician, I can only hear the final result at the end. I might then think of something I would want to change, but as a musician it is nearly impossible to be one hundred percent satisfied.

Das Album enthält rauen Black Metal, aber auch schöne folkige Teile. Werden diese Teile getrennt voneinander oder im Vorhinein zusammen geschrieben?

Your album has harsh black metal, but also beautiful folk music. Do you write these parts separately at first, or together from the beginning?

K.C: Ich würde die Melodien gar nicht als folkig bezeichnen, sondern eben eher als atmosphärisch oder tragend. Die Kombination von unterschiedlichen Teilen passiert immer intuitiv. Die meisten Parts entstehen zwar einzeln, aber ich habe keine feste Herangehensweise beim Songwriting und die Teile werden so aneinandergereiht, wie es für mich schlüssig klingt.

I wouldn’t describe the melodies as folk music, but rather as atmospheric or supportive. The combination of different parts always happens intuitively. Most parts come into being on their own, but I don’t have a fixed process for songwriting and most of the parts come together through whatever sounds good.

Was sind für dich die Unterschiede zwischen dem Solo Projekt und dem Spielen in einer vollbesetzten Band? Ist das eine besser als das andere?

What is the difference for you between making solo music and playing in a band? Is one better than the other?

K.C: Es gibt wirklich erhebliche Unterschiede, besser oder schlechter ist keines davon. In einer Band, mit gleichwertigen Musikern ist man stellenweise einfach dazu verpflichtet Kompromisse einzugehen und sich auch anderen Ideen unterzuordnen. Das hat man als Solomusiker natürlich nicht und man ist vollkommen frei in der musikalischen Auslebung. Allerdings hat man in einer Band das gemeinsame Musizieren, das voneinander Lernen und die Gemeinschaft, die in unserem Fall auch gute Freundschaft bedeutet. Ich möchte beides nicht missen.

There are really major differences, neither is better or worse. In a band, with equal musicians you are sometimes simply obliged to make compromises and also submit to other ideas. Naturally, as a solo musician this isn’t necessary and musical expression is totally free. However, in a band there’s the shared music making, learning from each other, and community, which in our case also means good friendship. I wouldn’t want to do without either.

Was war die erste Musik, die dich inspiriert hat?

What was the first music to inspire you?

K.C: Die erste Musik überhaut kann ich nicht mehr sagen. Speziell im Black Metal haben mich immer die deutschen Grüßen Nagelfar und Lunar Aurora sehr inspieriert. Im laufe der Jahre, in denen ich diese Musik höre und selbst spiele, kamen aber immer mehr Einflüsse aus verschiedenen Ecken dazu. Eine Aufzählung wäre unendlich lang.

Regarding the first music, I can no longer say. Specifically in black metal, the German bands Nagelfar and Lunar Aurora were very inspirational. But through the years of listening to this music and playing it myself, more and more influences from different corners have been added. A list would be endless.

Welche andere Musik hörst du jetzt?

What other music are you currently enjoying?

K.C: Auch hier ist die Liste lang. Am meisten höre ich schon Black Metal, gerade auch weil es ja sehr viele Variationen gibt. Ansonsten spielen Doom Metal, Post Rock, Dark Folk und Bands wie Pink Floyd oder Led Zeppelin eine wichtige Rolle für mich. Sonst gibt es auch noch sehr viele Genres, in denen ich einzelnen Bands sehr viel abgewinnen kann.

Here too the list is long. For the most part I listen to black metal, especially as there are so many variations. Other than that, doom metal, post rock, dark folk and bands like Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin play an important role for me. There are also individual bands of many genres I can take a lot from.
