This week´s pick so no newbie group. Formed in 1978 Tygers of Pan Tang is much older than I am and even managed to split up twice before I was so much as an idea. However, now after countless of singles, EPs and full-length albums they are back at it once again with a brand-new EP A New Heartbeat.

Consisting of two old tracks and two new tracks, the EP clocks up on just over 18 minutes of what I could only describe as joyful.

“A New Heartbeat” is one of the two new tracks. Right off the back it´s obvious that this group is not new to the field of metal. Mainstream sounding without that modern intrusion that often effects old school members trying to make some sort of a combat. It almost sounds like it´s been soaking in its own formula for quite some time, really not taking any chances in this day of age with all kinds of offspring and hell spawns from what this sort of music originates. The textbook heavy metal continues with the other new track “Red Mist”. It is a bit more dynamic than the previous one with more distinct tempo changes and riff variation which is this track´s strong side. Polished, fitting solo with a Van Halen feel and while the first track´s vocals make me think of Europe´s Joey Tempest, this one has more of a Robert Plant feel to it.

Now, from their debut 1980 full length album Wild Cat, the next two tracks are a re-recorded classic. “Fireclown” is what starts out as something that brings your mind to ballads, but quickly turns into more heavy metal side of Deep Purple. Of course, it sounds much older than the previous two tracks, which is expected, it´s so joyful to hear such polished-up blast from the past true to its genre. “Killers” is the same way, also being a certain nostalgic invasion which most, if not all fans of this genre and this group throughout time will find joy in.

It´s always pleasant to see old timers still active and kicking it strong. Now back with two brand new tracks as well as two brand new members Tygers of Pan Tang still sound true to their era, and they have fun doing what they do. Good for them. Go get this EP! 8.5/10 Julia Katrin
