Die deutsche Band Valborg erforschen seit 20 Jahren die düstersten Themen und verfeinern ihren brutal, industrialisierten Extreme Metal-Sound. 10 Jahre nach der ursprünglichen Veröffentlichung wird das 2012 erschienene Album Nekrodepression die Band von Total Dissonance Worship neu aufgelegt. Zum ersten Mal können Fans das Album auf Vinyl genießen. Die von vielen, darunter Tom G. Warrior von Celtic Frost und Triptykon, hochgeschätzte Band hätte es verdient, bekannter zu werden. Ich sprach mit Gitarrist und Sänger Christian Kolf über die Musik der Band, ihre Geschichte und ihre Pläne.

Germany’s Valborg have been exploring the darkest themes and refining their harsh, industrialised Extreme Metal sound for 20 years. 10 years after its original release, the band’s 2012 album Nekrodepression is being reissued by Total Dissonance Worship. For the first time fans can enjoy the album on vinyl. Highly regarded by many, including Tom G. Warrior of Celtic Frost and Triptykon, the band deserve to be more widely known. I spoke with guitarist/ vocalist Christian Kolf about the band’s music, history and plans.

Danke, dass Sie für das Blessed Altar Zine Interview gekommen sind. Meine erste Frage ist, wer sind Valborg und was macht jeder in der Band?

Thanks for agreeing to this interview for Blessed Altar Zine. First of all, who is Valborg and what does each member contribute to the band?

Christian: Hey, gerne und kein Problem. Valborg existieren dieses Jahr 20 Jahre und im gleichen Line-Up seit 14 Jahren: Jan Buckard (Bass, Gesang), Florian Toyka (Drums) und Christian Kolf (Gitarre, Gesang). Jan kümmert sich ansonsten noch um die Illustrationen, Grafiken, Layout, also alles Optische was Valborg betrifft. Für uns das eine weitere, sehr wichtige Ebene, neben der Musik.

Hey, my pleasure and no problem. Valborg has existed for 20 years and in the current line-up for 14 years: Jan Buckard (Bass, Vocals), Florian Toyka (Drums) and Christian Kolf (Guitar, Vocals). Jan also takes care of the illustrations, graphics, layout and everything else concerning the visuals of Valborg. For us, this is another very important aspect, alongside the music.

Das Album Nekrodepression hat eine neue Version. Woher kommt die Idee?

The band’s 2012 album Nekrodepression has a new version coming this year. How did this reissue come together?

Christian: Unser Freund Simon Hawemann von Total Dissonance Worship, hat uns angesprochen, ob wir interessiert daran sind, “Nekrodepression” auf Vinyl rauszubringen. Ohne ihn wäre das alles garnicht Zustande gekommen.

Our friend Simon Hawemann from Total Dissonance Worship spoke with us, to ask if we were interested in releasing “Nekrodepression” on vinyl. Without him, none of this would have come together.

Woran erinnern Sie sich aus der Zeit, als Sie Nekrodepression gemacht haben?

What are your main memories of the making of Nekrodepression?

Christian: Wir haben damals sehr viel Zeit miteinander verbracht, viel geprobt und viel live gespielt. Das Album ist komplett im Proberaum enstanden und wir haben die Songs gemeinsam geschrieben. Stellenweise sind Songs aus Jamsessions entstanden. Nebenbei haben haben wir noch einiges an Musik aus Spaß gemacht. Songs mit Drumcomputer und Synthesizer, die wir nur für uns geschrieben haben. Dabei sind auch einige Ideen bei rumgekommen, die nachher in die Musik von “Nekrodepression” eingeflossen sind.

We spent a lot of time together back then, rehearsing a lot and playing live many times. The album was made entirely in the rehearsal room and we wrote the songs together. In places songs came out of jam sessions. Aside from that, some music we made for fun. We wrote some songs on a drum machine and synthesiser just for ourselves. In the process, some of these ideas were later incorporated into the music of “Nekrodepression”

Wie ist die Band zusammen gekommen? Was hat sich jetzt für die Band verändert?

How did the band first come together and what has changed for Valborg since your early days?

Christian: Ich habe unseren damaligen Drummer Patrick Schroeder im Internet kennengelernt. Er und Jan waren Nachbarn. In den Jahren von 2002 bis 2006 war Valborg eher ein Recording Projekt. 2007 haben wir dann zusammen mit Patrick unser erstes Album “Glorification of Pain” aufgenommen. Danach ist er ausgestiegen und wurde von Florian ersetzt. Seit dem durchlaufen Valborg immer wieder neue Phasen, die jeweils von unseren Lebenumständen beeinflusst werden.

I met our original drummer Patrick Schroeder on the internet. He and Jan were neighbours. In the years 2002 to 2006 Valborg was more of a recording project. Then in 2007, together with Patrick, we made our first album “Glorification of Pain”. After that he left the band and Florian took his place. Since then Valborg has been going through new phases, each influenced by our own life circumstances.

Ihre Lieder sind meistens auf Deutsch. Wie wichtig ist das für die Musik?

You mostly sing in your native German. How important is this to what you want to create?

Christian: Mit “Nekrodepression” haben wir erst angefangen auf Deutsch zu singen. Vorher hatten wir dafür keinen richtigen Modus, kein Gefühl. Mittlerweile ist es für uns ganz normal und fühlt sich genau richtig an. Wir können garnicht mehr anders.

With “Nekrodepression” we first started singing only in German. Before that we didn’t have the right mode or feeling for it. It’s become normal for us and feels just right. We can’t help it anymore.

Sie kennen sich mit Tom G. Warrior. Er hat viele gute Dinge über Valborg gesagt. Wenn wir über die Geschichte vom extremen Metal sprechen, wie wichtig ist Tom? Haben Sie vor, zusammen in der Zukunft zu arbeiten?

The band has some history with Tom G. Warrior and he speaks very highly of the band. How important is Tom’s place in the history of extreme metal? Is it possible you might collaborate one day?

Christian: Der Einflussvon Tom auf den extremen Metal ist selbstredent. Er ist ein Pionier und hat den extremen Metal maßgeblich mit geformt. Er war der Flügelschlag eines Schmetterlings und daraus ist soviel entstanden: Musik, Mode, Lifestyle, Showbusiness. Es bestehen keine Pläne einer Zusammenarbeit. Tom ist vor allen Dingen ein Freund und ein herzlicher Mensch, und wir freuen uns immer sehr wenn sich unsere Wege kreuzen. Er hat viel für uns getan, dafür sind wir ihm sehr dankbar.

The influence of Tom in Extreme Metal is self-evident. He is a pionier and has played a major role in shaping Extreme Metal. He was the flap of a butterfly’s wings and so much has come from it: music, fashion, lifestyle, showbusiness. There are no plans for a collaboration. Tom is before all a friend and a heartfelt person and we are always happy when our paths cross. He has done a lot for us, for which we are very grateful.

Was macht die Band jetzt? Haben Sie Pläne etwas Neues zu machen?

What is the band working on at the moment? Are there plans for any new releases?

Christian: Wir haben ein neues Album fertig, an dem wir in den letzten zwei Jahre gearbeitet haben, welches voraussichtlich im Sommer veröffentlicht wird. Die Songs sind kürzer und brutaler als sonst und wurden wieder gemeinsam im Proberaum geschrieben.

We have a new album ready that we have been working on for the past two years, which is expected to come out in the summer. The songs are shorter and more brutal than usual and were written together again in the rehearsal studio.

Welche andere Musik hören Sie jetzt?

What other music are you currently enjoying?

Christian: Alles mögliche. Wir haben neben Metal schon immer viele andere Genres gehört: Klassik, Jazz, Funk, RnB, Elektronik. Zum Beispiel Künstler wie Steve Reich, Allan Holdsworth, Miroslav Vitouš, Chic, Steely Dan, D’Angelo, Erykah Badu und Autechre.

All kinds of things. We’ve always listened to many other genres besides Metal: Classical, Jazz, Funk, RnB, Electronic. For example, artists like Steve Reich, Allan Holdsworth, Miroslav Vitouš, Chic, Steely Dan, D’Angelo, Erykah Badu and Autechre.
