One of my favorite things about the metal underground is its uncanny ability to produce absolutely stunning independent bands. One of the latest canadian gems to shake things up is the powerful and heavy as hell LUTHARÖ. They have been around for a few years, pumping out EP’s and playing steady shows. I’ve caught them a few times opening for local acts and bigger bands like Cryptospy and Killitorous. They’ve been gaining tons of momentum and having just released their 3rd EP “Wings of Agony” on March 27th, they show no sign of slowing down and every intention of giving you a goddamn neck injury.

“Wings of Agony” explodes with an intense metal energy that does not relent throughout the listen. Harnessing the spirit of power metal but infusing grit with the grit of death metal keeps LUTHARÖ on interesting ground. They have magnificent runs and they back it up with powerful growls and even more impressive clean vocals by lead singer Krista Shipperbottom. Their sound is energetic and brings in different elements of bands like Unleash The Archers, Lamb of God, Testament,  Dark Tranquility, and Arch Enemy. The result is fantastic.

Bands that embrace multiple metal styles have a tendency to lose me with watered down or over the top gimmicks and less than ideal vocals but LUTHARÖ have set a new bar. They have a fresh devastating sound and deliver an absolute rager of a release. Every song annihilated me to be honest. Lightning fast shredding in the pick work, insane drumming, amazing melody, and dialed vocals will keep me and many metalheads coming back for more.

As you may have already gathered, LUTHARÖ keep things pretty fast paced. The first two tracks, “Barren”, and “Diamond Back” are non stop and two of the best tracks on the EP. There’s no filler here though with solid tracks “Blood Lightning” and “Will to Survive” leading into a wicked closer. Title track “Wings of Agony” builds to the point of explosion and highlights everything you need to know about LUTHARÖ. Luring you in with the siren’s beautiful call before they completely and utterly eviscerate you. Enjoy this one and blast it loud! 9/10 Metal Yeti

9/10 : Epic Storm!
